The Ascot Chase is the function race on the Berkshire course on Saturday. The Grade 1 contest over 2m 5f is considered one of the highlights of the National Hunt season within the run-up to the Cheltenham Festival.

Champion coach Paul Nicholls has received this race four times and is chasing an unprecedented fifth success. He has just one entry in Saint Calvados.

Eight runners have been declared to line up, including Silviniaco Conti Chase winner Mister Fisher, Grade 1 winner Fakir D’oudairies and the defending champion Dashel Drasher.

Nicholls can lengthen record

Saint Calvados moved to Paul Nicholls’ Ditcheat yard this season and it was no shock to see the horse present instant improvement when he made his debut for the master trainer at Kempton.

The nine-year-old completed third in the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day behind Tornado Flyer and Clan Des Obeaux. In what was his first run since February, it was a formidable display, and you would expect him to enhance on that displaying on his subsequent start.

A wind operation again in November has clearly helped him. It was only two years in the past that he finished only a neck behind Min in second place in the Ryanair Chase and this seems a great opportunity for him to land the primary Grade 1 success of his career.

Conditions are more doubtless to be testing at Haydock and if more rain arrives earlier than the start of this race, his chances are going to be helped, his best form having come on delicate or heavy floor.

Nicholls clearly feels confident in his new chaser and the yard’s type has improved over the past week, which is also an enormous plus. We are likely to see this horse again at the Cheltenham Festival and a victory here will be an enormous increase to him ahead of that appearance.

Lostintranslation at home at Ascot

Colin Tizzard had a major Saturday success with Eldorado Allen in the Denman Chase at Newbury seven days ago and might be set to land one other massive prize with Lostintranslation in the Ascot Chase.

The 10-year-old scored at this course in November within the Chanelle Pharma 1965 Chase, by which he hit the entrance two out earlier than stretching away from his rivals, who included Dashel Drasher.

On his subsequent look within the King George, Kempton continued to be a venue that did not swimsuit him and he had to settle for fifth in a nine-runner area. The one optimistic from that exhibiting was it was the first time he had completed the course for the Boxing Day characteristic, in what was his third attempt.

The Tizzard team have at all times thought plenty of this chaser. He has clearly not been a simple horse to train but the wind surgical procedure he underwent in November may have helped him overcome any breathing problems he had.

His five chasing wins include two at three miles, so his stamina can’t be questioned. Connections of the 2019 Betfair Chase winner will really feel their horse has unfinished business.

Lostintranslation has an entry in the Cheltenham Gold Cup next month. A huge efficiency from him in the Ascot Chase may set up him as an out of doors contender for that wide-open renewal of the Blue Riband event on the Festival.
